Carbon neutral design unveiled for resort on the Black Sea coast

rkMadara Bulgarian Property Fund, listed on the London Stock exchange, has announced the completion of the master plan for their carbon neutral residential complex Black Sea Gardens. The ecological development, situated south of the coastal city of Varna, has been designed by the world famous Foster + Partners architectural studio.
The development will create a year-round community for up to 15 400 residents. The residential clusters are tightly packed and integrated into the contours of the landscape, so preserving most of the site as virgin territory. Anchored by a 220-berth marina and with a
lakeside spa, activity centre, sports park, restaurants and shops, Black Sea Gardens will become a key leisure destination. Other sustainable strategies include using biofuels to power the CHP plant on site, so providing power for five villages all year round. The landscaping of the two river valleys controls water run-off from the surrounding land by harvesting the water in naturally formed basins.
The five hill towns are characterised by the nature of their immediate surroundings - to create a 'Sky Village', a 'Wilderness Village', a 'Meadow Village', a 'Cape Village' and the 'Sea Village' by the marina.
